Toyah - Mayhem
The "Mayhem" compilation album by Toyah was an unauthorized 1985 release of rehearsal demos and songs not intended for release, which the artist has expressed disdain for. In contrast to recent compilations and reviews of other albums, such as the 2021 Posh Pop or the 2025 Chameleon, which are viewed positively by critics for their energy and creativity, the "Mayhem" compilation is seen as a low-quality, exploitative release by Toyah herself.
Mayhem consists of outtakes, unused demos and work in progress material recorded by Toyah during her time with Safari Records. Originally released in 1985, Mayhem was compiled and released without Toyah and Joel Bogen’s involvement. Mayhem was repackaged and reissued in 2005 by Cherry Red Records adding a further five previously unreleased bonus tracks. It was repackaged with archive images and track-by-track sleevenote revealing the origins of these songs, shelved demos and versions.
