Vicious Pink - Vicious Pink (Remastered & Expanded)

Over on the old blog I was asked for a re-up of some Vicious Pink, which is both random as fuck and totally expected. The original files have been lost in the great burn by mega so I searched the interweb for a suitable substitute. And here you have a very suitable substitute, enjoy!

Vicious Pink is a synth-pop duo hailing from Leeds, emerging from the vibrant local music scene in the early 1980's. Originally known as Vicious Pink Phenomenon the duo consisted of English/French singer Josephine Warden and keyboardist Brian Moss. The duo began as backing vocalists for Soft Cell until the band shortened their name. With a catchy sound and a penchant for highly provocative and sexualized lyrics, the band's music was aimed toward clubs rather than commercial hits and went on to record with respected producer Tony Mansfield. Vicious Pink was able to briefly attain a cult level of success without ever breaking into the mainstream. Although they had started releasing music in 1982, they failed to attract much attention until the release of the single "Cccan't You See" (UK No. 67) and its instrumental B-side "8:15 to Nowhere" in 1984. Over the next two years the band made music for the clubs with both sides of this single accruing play and widespread support on dance-floors either side of the Atlantic.

I really, really like this album because it's an eclectic mix of everything I like about 80s new wave and synthpop. We have the disco bangers, quirky instrumental tracks, theatrical pop songs, and left-field pop numbers. Like the neon album cover, there is really no subtlety to this album. It gives you what you want almost immediately. Classic moments are the borderline-grating synth line in Almost Hoping and the bombastic power-pop chorus of Take Me Now. I would suggest anybody who likes things that are super 80s to listen to this, or fans of alternative pop female vocalists who need something new to obsess over for a cute month or two.

This seminal collection of the band's work is a great example of the emerging electronic movement within the UK in the early 1980's. Featuring the nine tracks of the original album plus seven bonus tracks taken from the band's four singles during their spell with Parlophone, including four versions of the band's best known single 'CCCan't You See' and their 'Fetish' and 'Take Me Now' singles plus the -side 'I Confess' from 1985.
