Various Artists - Natures Mortes-Still Lives

Released by 4AD as a sampler album Natures Mortes-Still Lives was initially a vinyl, Japanese-only release (CAD 117) in 1981. It saw a mail-order reissue in 1997, and for some strange reason, 500 copies were imported back into the UK record shops. It's certainly a curiosity for any 4AD fan at the time of its original release, though this pertains mostly to the label's post-punk/experimental era. All the tracks had been previously released by 4AD with well-known acts such as Bauhaus, the Birthday Party, The The, and Modern English making appearances, as do some lesser-known 4AD bands (Rema Rema, Dif Juz, Sort Sol, Psychotik Tanks, etc.). With the exception of Rema-Rema's "Feedback Song" (track 3) which has an alternate intro that is unique to this compilation, all the other tracks were previously available.
