The Revillos - Attack!
"Attack!" by The Revillos, a follow-up to their debut "Rev Up", is generally reviewed as a solid, if slightly less impressive, album of sci-fi punk and new wave madness. While some critics found it a bit of a disappointment compared to "Rev Up", others praise its continued exploration of the band's unique sound and its fun, hook-filled energy.
Perhaps Attack! hasn't got highs as stratospheric as those on the Revillos' debut, yet this is still remarkably entertaining, clearly deranged revivalist pop by a bunch of Scottish weirdos, mostly delivered by the thick accent of Fay Fife, so it is very hard for me not to warm up to them. As usual there's the instrumental bits reminiscent of long lost heist movie soundtracks ("Man Hunt"), voodoo madness ("Caveman Raveman"), primitive stomps ("Mad From Birth To Death"), space age frippery ("Sputnik Kids") or frantic, sax-led flailing ("Do the Mutilation"), without forgetting the usual nods to bubblegum, rockabilly and punk.
It could be argued that the Revillos were far too insane to ever deliver a completely coherent, non-maddening record, that's an argument I won't even try to counter. However, in an age of so many straightforward, formatted cleanliness, the ragged pop songs the Revillos draw out from the swamps can't help but amuse and excite.
