Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device 7” Alternative Ulster 7”

While I’m hanging around in *sunny Belfast and traveling around the North of Ireland I thought that it would be cool to share a couple of rips from Belfast boy’s Stiff Little Fingers.

After the Good Vibrations compilation on Saturday night celebrating all that Irish angst, all the chocolate eggs that have been eaten on Sunday and Monday, that Tuesday lunch would continue with two of the most outstanding singles ever released on an unsuspecting public. With the embers of the original punk surge during 1977 fading and going out, it was a pleasant change for me to discover “Suspect Device” at a friend’s house. At that point while we jumped around and tried to sing/shout/scream along, all seemed right with the world.

We were too young to know what was going on in Belfast at that time, and it wasn’t until “Alternative Ulster” came out later that year did we join the dots and get the full picture of what Jake Burns was shouting about. I made a point of taking “Alternative Ulster” to school with me for my form class to listen too during ‘music’ lessons. Preaching from the pulpit of the schools turntable…and now preaching from the safety of my keyboard.

*Sunny – highly unlikely but one never knows
